After years my friends get used to fact that spending my time to different hobbies. But even the ones most familiar to this situation, stop for a minute and ask ” Hey, you mean cello?” when they heard I started learning Cello.

The only thing I know is, since my youth I was eager to play a musical instrument. I feel that this is kind of magic. Think, playing some melodies by looking to some figures on piece of paper. This is like a man who can’t read, emulating on other who reads a book. But in fact, there is more because, even if the man can’t read but can speak, means he knows how to use his mouth, tongue and his chordae vocalis. So I should say this way in order to fully illustrate the situation: A man who can’t talk emulating to read a book…

After years of emulating, everything happened quickly before my military service. (we have a 6 to 15 months obligatory military service in Turkey) We say in Turkey that military is a place where there is no logic. I guess during this pre-service period I lost my logic and sense, and fall in this passion unconsciously. In fact among the opacity of then irrationality I can faintly remember a few fractions of thoughts:

  • Dude I’ll be away at service after two months, yes you will, and my mind is totally empty, it IS empty, lets try it till my service, try it dude, if my passion is still in me I can go on when I return from service, sir yes sir…
  • Until when will you delay this? If I can’t manage it in my thirties (at this time of unfortunate prediction I was 28) I can never manage it.
  • A small investment at the beginning and it can last my next decade (yeah yeah…)
  • How hard can it be? (hahahah)

Full of this thoughts I found a few place, meet with one and in the same week I started the lessons. The pre-Service period was fruitless in cello learning but nevertheless it was a start. I didn’t say anything why I chose cello. because I still don’t know why I did that. Violin or piano are more popular, but didn’t even think of them. My passion of playing an instrument turned to be playing a cello. I don’t know how or when that transition happened. Maybe Yo-Yo Ma was the reason…
