First of all, I hope this article is not your only decision maker. I mean not only this page, but if you solely rely on what you read on web, you’ll regret this is in the future. So the first thing you must do is to find a teacher. Even if you aren’t working with a teacher, you must find an help to choose a proper cello. This help may come from a professional cellist, an orchestra member or a person who is teaching.

This is especially important if you are purchasing in low budget. Good old days of the 17th century has passed. Nowadays instruments in the low budget are produced in factories (especially in China) by workers, not by luthiers. Select the best aged wood? Shape it in weeks to a special geometry? Cut the bridge and other outfits from proper woods? Oh, no! Forget them all. That $500 priced cello with outfits is not a real cello. It is an object that looks like a cello. That is what can be called because it is not even made of real wood; but plywood.

The worse part of the story is not the material they are produced of; but the quality of hand labour they are receiving. String instruments are the most delicate product made by wood and are supposed to be hand-made. Otherwise this delicate product can be hard to play. Not only the back and belly plates; but others like bridge, fingerboard, nut… They all affect the playability very much. I’m not talking about the quality of sound, projection of instrument etc. What I’m saying is an instrument not properly set up won’t reveal you the secrets of cello easily, it will not help you to learn. That’s why, they must be chosen carefully. And only an experienced player can separate a better instrument between tens of similar ones. So if you are searching your first cello, be sure to find an help.
