There is a treasure in 2, Sackville Street amidst all the turmoil of the Piccadilly region in London. Henry Sotheran’s is an incomparable bookshop to a bibliophile. To find this place by pure luck was a good surprise for me. I guess have a blessing from someone …

Established in 1761 at York, Henry Sotheran Limited, holds the title of being the world’s oldest antique book dealer. Until 1815 they stay in York and then moved in to London. In 1936, they moved to their address in Sackville Street. For 250 years, they continue to provide services for the collectors and bibliophiles.

I didn’t asked it but most probably this place has not changed the interior design since their move, in 1936. When you enter you feel like doing a time travel. Except the desks in the middle, everywhere is full of book shelves. Though the desks is full of books so there is not any difference than a shelf.

The staff is very warm and encouraging. You may need that courage to enter a historic bookstore and ask a book. Before, I’ve been to places who scrambles to be old and traditional with being snob, so I know the difference.

Once inside, I spent some time to look around. There are so many interesting topics with many books that, I felt that if I begin to buy I can never stop. So I asked a few of the books I have already been seeking. I found some titles of Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace but I forgot that this place is not a regular bookstore. They give me £ 1000 – £ 1500 copies which are first or second press. So I said, a little embarrassed, looking for reading-copies, so they searched for newer copies. I bought a nice copy of Darwin’s Descent of Man.

I don’t know your relation with reading and books; and how does that relation affects your point of view to bookstores, but for me the most comforting thing is to walk around in a bookstore. I’m not talking about buying books, but walking around them, touch them, to reverse a book which sits upside down on a shelf relieves me from everyday stresses. In this sense, to walk inside Henry Sotheran’s was a boom of tranquility for me. Even months after, when I the recall the memory I smile and remember that feeling.
