In early April of 2011, I visited Valencia with my family. This trip was initially a business trip so unlike my habits I didn’t do much search before coming. After arrival it became clear that we have one full day to explore Valencia. So we looked what we can do.

In fact, I’d never noticed Mercado Central. Maybe you have seen before, there are articles in newspapers that lists “Ten Best Places to Visit”. My mother saw such an article and take it with her. We saw the market place in that list and with my Moms insistence we decided to visit. Thank you Mom! Because I would not find it worth to visit.

Markets and bazaars hold an important place in Turkish culture. People still supply their vegetables, fruits, dairy products and meat from these markets. Unlike supermarkets or shopping malls, they provide a more social and friendly ambiance. That’s why I try to go markets as much as possible. I saw the best markets in Spain among the countries I have been to.  As you know, for several centuries, Iberian Peninsula was under Moor’s control. This may be the reason, I do not know. But the fact is this market in Valencia impressed me so much.

Mercado Central has a long history. As far as I know, it is the oldest of the similar markets in the city. But the current structure was built in early 20th century. The building itself, with the colored glass, iron roof, is also quite interesting.

Once inside, a spell surrounds you Our markets has much more mongering, but this one is that familiar happy hum of thousands of people. An important part of this spell is the colorful benches. Some are familiar vegetables, the others are fruits I had never seen and in others numerous seafood. We couldn’t resist more and we bought something to eat.

In Mercado Central, the most amazing was the seafood, the variety is unbelievable. Like Spain, Turkey is also on a peninsula but we are not so conscious about seafood like Spain. We’re very close to deplete the anchovy in our sees.

Mercado Central took our 1.5 hours, beyond we thought. But the spell of the market was still on us when we leaved there. When I think Valencia in future, surely this will be the place I first remember.
