Santa Maria del Mar may not be the most important structure of Barcelona but it is the beloved church of the city which is still in use. It can be translated like St. Mary by the Sea. The name “by the Sea” is no more relevant today, but it gives an idea about the whereabout of the sea in 14th century.

After I returned to Turkey I made some search and learn that, the work for the church began in 1320’s and ended in 1383. In the middle ages 60 years for such a construction is considered a relatively short period of time. The King of Aragon himself supervising the construction, perhaps this explains the reason for this pace. When construction periods span centuries, architects changes, architectural styles changes and sometimes even the control of the land changes to another country. So since it built fast architectural style is consistent and Santa Maria del Mar is one of the better examples of its’ period.

Our main reason to visit the Santa Maria del Mar was not its’ visual attributes. Maybe you noticed already, I try to listen a classical music concert in every major city I have been to. I was thinking the same thing in Barcelona but this time I would have shot two birds with one stone. The first bird is easily identified, listening to classical music, second bird is to see the amazing atmosphere in the city’s one of the most beautiful churches. Moreover, the composition which will be played is Mozart’s Requiem so the value of the second bird is really high.

On the concert day we arrived one hour earlier to examine this beautiful church. Santa Maria del Mar, was built near the harbor of the middle age. The purpose of the construction was not high aristocracy but the public. For that reason local people loved it more than the other churches in every century. This love still continues toward Santa Maria del Mar. In its location, streets are to narrow to see the church at a glance. You must walk around it and see part by part. It covers your vision and is too high.

Our tickets had seat numbers on it but to our surprise people were sitting where they please. So we decided not to linger outside but to find a good seat. Inside you can witness the full dimensions of the church which is more difficult to do from outside. It is a longitudinal rectangular structure without any partitions. Columns combines with dome elegantly after reaching dizzying heights. This is an impressive architectural work.

When Rajsky Wojciech and Poland Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra with University of Gdansk Academic Choir were seen on the stage, church was full. The Requiem is Mozart’s last work so that he died before finishing it. So its place in literature is always special. Further it is one of the most mysterious story with the story of ordering the work, the unknown identity of the client, death of Mozart, the work’s unfinished statue, the people who were suspected of the composer’s death and the efforts of secretly completing the work. After this article please listen it and if you wonder search the story behind it.
