Second Tonearm to Gyrodec

As I told in Michell Gyrodec article, Gyrodecs have a flexible design. Like in other analog devices, you can also make little touches in hi-fi. In analog photography every slide film has its own character and promotes different colors of light but digital cards are all same! Since my turntable have this flexibility I wanted to use the potential.

My motivation to add a second arm to Michell was this: As you know cartridge styli worn as they are used, and after some time they must be renewed. I don’t have a CD player in my system so on some days I listen records for 6 – 7 hours. Apparently this listening sessions are not all critic listening on the listening point, sometimes I play it as a background music. So I thought, since my turntable permits this why not add a second tonearm and use a cheap cartridge on this tonearm. I already have a Rega Elys2 cartridge to use for this purpose.

Then I started to search to see what are others thinking and aiming about two tonearms. Some people uses a mono cartridge on one of the tonearms to listen the mono recordings. Others make cartridge choices according to their musical tastes. For example for classical music a more balanced cartridge, for jazz music a cartridge better for mid frequencies. Or for rock music a more “metallic” cartridge. Others have other reasons but I understand that two tonearms give ability to discover more in hi-fi hobby.

Gyrodecs have three lead weights under its sub-chassis. With the help of this weights all the system stays in equilibrium on three suspension springs. If the user wanted to add a second tonearm, this means adding around 2 lbs on the chassis which will cancel the equilibrium. Once the equilibrium is gone forget about the high fidelity.

So what is the Michell’s design about flexibility? I have mentioned about three lead weights, these weights are removable when needed. So when you add the second tonearm, by removing the lead you can keep the equilibrium. My original Gyrodec is this:

Thanks to the Michell’s foresight, I was ready to make an operation to my Gyrodec by the help of some courage and experience. What I did was, to move the motor which is standing freely in the left rabbit ear to the front left of the deck. So I have a free rabbit ear to use for second tonearm. Then I drilled three holes in appropriate positions there to attach the Moerch armplate.  I said, I moved the motor to the front left position, but of course I had to make a hole on the acrylic. You may not notice it from the photograph but the motor sits directly on the rack, passing through the acrylic. Thus the vibrations caused by motor doesn’t effect the stylus.

What changed in my life after I add second tonearm to my deck? For now I’m using cheap cartridge – expensive cartridge combination. But I have to confess that usually I’m using the expensive cartridge. This means my initial plan doesn’t seem to work because when I need background music I prefer my Sansui TU-717 tuner. In 2013 I’m planning to add a quality MC cartridge to my system. If this happens I’m planning to use cartridges by music types. For future I also have plans for a headphone amplifier. With this I can enjoy music without disturbing anyone in home. If this happens, I can use one of the arms with this amplifier.

Let me say you, second tonearm doubles your turntable joy. Do it if your tables supports this.

Thanks for any other informative site. Where else may just I get that kind of info written in such an ideal way?
I’ve a challenge that I’m simply now operating on, and I’ve been at the glance out for such info.
