As usual, let me start with the building. This building is built as arsenal and it is one of the most important baroque building in Berlin. Walls of the inner hall of the building is decorated with the painful faces of dying soldiers. The designs are not story of heroisms; just the vivid and realistic expressions in moment of death.

In 1848, during a rebellion, Berliners hoping to join the revolution, tried to enter building to find ammo. As a result many have been killed and no ammunition found. But after this incident, the authorities understood the need to protect the building. And 30 years after the incident, the building is converted to a museum and the Prussian army used Zeughaus to exhibit military tools and vehicles. Hitler during the Nazi period, used it as a propaganda tool for the World War II. He explained the so called injustice they received during the war through Museum.

The building was severely damaged during the war, but in 1953 turned into a museum once again, describing the history of German. But still, being in the East side of the divided Berlin, it reflected the Eastern perspective. Even after the merging, the subjective nature of the history and the political pressures result with a seven year restoration and re-opened in 2006. As a result, the museum’s enormous collection is rearranged to take the visitors to a journey starting from dark ages to the present.

Since the content of the museum is huge, at the entrance you have to make a plan and decide how much time can you spent. You can select between the tours, shortest one is two hours long. You can learn more in the entrance. In addition, audio guides are worth buying.

Contents of the collection, perhaps inevitably enters military matters. Starting from the first ages, major events that affect the history, along with items that have been used in these events is presented as a visual history. The value of the collection becomes more valuable as the time comes closer to present day. The French Revolution, the Prussian period and World War I era  is particularly successful. Weapons and ammunition used in the war itself, evokes different emotions in humans. Especially helmets… with a hole at one side.
