I already knew that, Germans are very successful in museums, but Jüdisch Museum was still impressed me when I see it. First, the architecture of the building is very different and special, I can’t go on without mentioning it.

Architect Daniel Libeskind designed the base of the building as a transformed version of the Star of David. Disturbing angles of the lines at the base continues at the other walls so that a person can not feel peaceful and comfortable inside the building. Thanks to the form of the building, even on a sunny happy day, the Architect changes your mood to uncomfortable, depressed and insecure. So the lives of Jews is mirrored to the visitors.

There is two more designs to reflect what happened in the war. They are on the ground floor of the museum, do not go upstairs without seeing them. First of them is Holocaust Tower. Interior of the tower is completely empty and it has walls combined with very strange angles. Visitors enters through the base and since it is illuminated with a very small opening to the outside, the tower has very dim light inside. After entering you need time to see again. Combined result of these designs is to escape from tower as soon as possible but wartime Jews couldn’t escape from their horrors…

Another design is Garden of Pillars which is accessed from the corridor “Axis of Exile”.  “Exile”, “being lost” and “prison” are the word that are embodied. This is an open air garden bounded with high walls. Inside the garden there is a number of high columns in a grid. Not as frightening as the Holocaust Tower  but makes you feel lonely. Again a remarkable detail is, the corridors passing through the Garden of Pillars leads to Holocaust Tower. In other words, at the end of the axis of exile, the Holocaust is still there.

The subject of the museum is not only the World War II. At the upper floors you can visit an exhibition which is nicely designed. Jews’ lives in German geography, their customs and important people of the Jewish community is among the subjects. I guess the purpose here is to tell the visitors, Jews has a long history in that land.
