When a turntable cartridge is in balance with the counterweight, a force called Vertical Tracking Force must be dialed in order to stylus must track the groove on LPs. Let me talk about some useless numbers. The grooves on LPs are between 0.025 mm and 0. 035 mm wide. If you think that the width of human hair is 0.18 mm; you can understand this is really tiny. Even a very minute jump of the stylus can effect the music, so a delicate adjustment must be made. Since the aforementioned forces are expressed in grams, people think they are ignorable but don’t forget the contact area between the stylus and groove is very small, so the pressure is about 30 kg/cm2, which is quite a big amount.

To get the best sound from the Hi-Fi system, the tracking force must be set accurately. If the force is less than required then the sound becomes thinner and stylus can not track the groove; if it is more than required the sound becomes dull and stylus can harm the groove. Each cartridge manufacturer specifies a value that must be used with the product, but with some tonearms you can never know the force you applied. In this case what you need is a stylus force gauges. Force gauges generally can weight 5 grams at most but they are sensitive enough to measure 1/1000th of a gram. There are mechanical and electronic models but in terms of ease at usage, electronic ones are better. As you progresses in this hobby you’ll eventually need a stylus force gauge. So, buy it as soon as possible and both your LPs and cartridges will be happy.
