I am a member in several hi-fi forums on the internet and before making a purchase or making a decision, I search thoroughly in these forums. While searching for record cleaning machines, I realized that one of the hot and controversial topics of the hi-fi is the record cleaning fluids. After seeing this I started to research.

Especially in America there are companies that produce products specially for record cleaning. Brush and other accessories comes after this most important topic, cleaning fluids. Each company have a special formula with a different active ingredient, and in forums there are tons of question either this one or that one is better. After some search this is a brief abstract:

– Fluids produced by the companies have secret formulas and you have to rely on if you want to use.

– Enzyme-containing fluids are more effective on cleaning the organics,

– Alcohol containing fluids are more effective on cleaning the oils,

– For both there are several options in US market.

I was in the market to clean around 1000 LPs plus the future buys. It turned out to be that, no matter which option I chose, I would need about 5 liters of cleaning fluid at average. In Turkey these fluids are not commercially available, so the reader should keep in mind this fact. YMMV if you live in US. At this point, I realized to import a chemical liquid at this volume to my country. Some companies have concentrated solutions but even with that I would be forced to an outsource. Finding good quality records is always a hard task and I didn’t want to add another task to it. So I decided to use a DIY recipe found on the internet. The ingredients I need is isoprophyl alcohol, distilled water, Kodak PhotoFlo and a window cleaning liquid. These are locally available products and I can get whenever I want. Probably commercial products are better but if they are hard to get, next best thing is diy. The formula I used is this:

  • 1 part isoprophyl alcohol
  • 4 part distilled water
  • 5 ml Window Cleaning Fluid
  • 10 drops Kodak PhotoFlo

I’m using this formula with record cleaning machine and then rinse the record with distilled water. You can find more in the Record Cleaning Ritual.
